A little about Vitamin B.... The B Vitamins help with the healthy functioning of the nerves, skin, eyes, hair, liver, and mouth. Muscle tone in the gastrointestinal tract and proper brain function are also directly related to the B Vitamins. B Vitamins are particularly important to the elderly as these nutrients are not as well absorbed as we age.
There have been recent studies linking deficiencies of B Vitamins (particularly B-12) and the B Complex vitamins and Alzheimers disease.
Comments....
B1 (Thiamine) -- Antibiotics, sulfa drugs and oral contraceptives decrease thiamine levels in the body. A high-carbohydrate diet also increases the need for Thiamine.
B2 (Riboflavin) -- Oral contraception and strenuous exercise affect Riboflavin levels in the body. Riboflavin is easily destroyed by alcohol, antibiotics and light.
B6 (Pyridoxine) -- Estrogen therapy, anti-depressants, and oral contraceptives may increase the need for Pyridoxine. Diuretics and cortisone drugs affect the absorption of B6 in the body.
B12 (Cyanocobalamin) -- Anticoagulants, anti-gout medications, and potassium supplements may block the absorption of B12 in the body.
Vegetarians need B12 supplements as Cyanocobalamin is found primarily in animal sources.
Biotin -- Antibiotics, sulfa drugs, saccharin, raw egg whites, and fats and oils that have been subjected to high heat affect Biotin levels and absorption in the body.
Folic Acid -- Oral contraceptives may increase the need in the body for Folic acid.
Alcohol affects the absorption of Folic acid in the body.
Inositol -- Large amounts of caffeine may affect the levels of Inositol in the body.
Para-Aminobenzoic Acid (PABA) -- Sulfa drugs may cause levels of Para Aminobenzoic acid to be lowered.
Warnings....
B3 (Niacin) -- A flush, usually harmless may sometimes occur after the intake of B3 supplements, a red rash and tingling sensation may also be experienced.
Pregnant women, diabetics, people with glaucoma, gout, liver disease or peptic ulcers should consult with a physician or pharmacist prior to taking Niacin. Excessive consumption of Niacin has been linked to liver damage.
Folic Acid -- High doses of Folic acid are not recommended if you suffer from a hormone related cancer or a convulsive disorder.
Consult with a physician or pharmacist prior to taking high doses of Folic acid.
